Beetroot can do wonders to your body. Grow now!!

Beetroots (Chukandar Plant) have been designated as a superfood for a good cause. These roots are nutrient-dense, water-rich, and contain almost little fat. Many people swear by one serving every day to improve their overall health and lifespan. And beetroot juice is equally as healthy as the veggie itself! There are other root vegetables which one can grow easily in the kitchen garden.

Health Benefits of Beetroot Plant

1. Many nutrients and few calories

Beet plant boasts an impressive nutritional profile. They're low in calories while being high in essential vitamins and minerals. They contain a tiny amount of practically every vitamin and mineral your body needs.

2. Could help keep your blood pressure in check

Beets have been extensively researched for their potential to lower high blood pressure, which is a crucial risk factor for heart disease. Research suggests that drinking beetroot juice can dramatically reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels.

3. Can improve athletic performance

Several studies have suggested that dietary nitrates, such as those contained in beets may improve athletic performance.

Nitrates appear to improve physical performance by increasing the efficiency of mitochondria, which are responsible for energy production in your cells.

4. May help fight inflammation

Beets contain pigments known as betalains, which have anti-inflammatory qualities. Chronic inflammation has been linked to obesity, heart disease, liver disease, and cancer, so this might help in various ways.

5. May improve digestive health

Beetroot has 3.4 grams of fibre per cup, making it a healthy source of fibre. Fibre avoids digestion and goes to the colon, nourishing beneficial gut flora and bulking up faeces.

It can improve digestive health, keep you regular, and help you avoid digestive issues including constipation, inflammatory bowel disease (IBS), and diverticulitis.

Nutritional Information

Beets are mostly made up of water (87%), carbohydrates (8%), and fibre (2–3%).

How Do You Grow Beets at Home?

Part 1: Sowing your seeds

a. Choose between seeds and seedlings - You can easily buy seeds from Urja Seeds. We at Urja Seeds believe in offering high-quality seeds at reasonable prices. We urge individuals to cultivate their own veggies in their backyards or kitchen gardens so that they may eat fresh, chemical-free food. Seeds care should be given utmost importance to get high yield.

b. Select a suitable space for growing beetroot.- Beetroot prefers neutral, wet, and fertile soil with little lime or acidity (pH 6.5-7.0). The soil should be soft and free of excessive clay or sand; however, because the root develops at the surface, clay soil can be tolerated if the top has been loosened by the addition of masses of well-rotted organic matter (do not apply this unless the soil has a lot of clay). The location must be bright and open, although it may withstand some shade.

c. Be aware that beetroot seedling may also be grown in pots. If you're dealing with the round type, a pot will suffice as long as it's at least 20cm (8in) in diameter and at least 20cm (8in) deep.

d. Make the soil airy to prepare it. Remove any weeds and other debris, as well as any stones that may be obstructing root growth. The soil has to be tilled to a depth of a spade blade. Rake over the top to loosen and roughly level the area.

e. Plant the seedlings or sow the seeds. Plant the seeds 2cm (3/4"-1") deep. Keep seeds at a minimum of 10 to 15cm apart (4-6"). Planting them in rows will be the most convenient.

Part 2: Taking Care of Your Seeds

a. Water regularly until the leaves grow. To begin the germination process, your seeds require a lot of water. Once developed, the roots will draw moisture from the earth.

b. Make them thinner. Cut the weakest seedlings until the remaining plants are at least 10 cm (4 inches) apart once your beetroot cultivation has sprouted roughly 2cm (1 inch) of leaves. [4] Do not pluck them by hand since this may harm the roots of other plants.

c. Plants should be fertilized. Per 10 square metres of bed, apply 4–6 litres (1.1–1.6 US gal) of complete organic fertilizer. A thin layer of compost or well-rotted manure should be added. If your plants aren't growing correctly, apply 30g of high nitrogen fertilizer per square metre.

d. Keep an eye out for birds and weeds. Depending on your location, you may need to create some form of cover for your beetroot growing time to keep animals away. On the other hand, weeds will have to be removed by hand. As soon as you notice one, get rid of it. However, when weeding, use caution. If you use hoes or other sharp items near the roots, you risk cutting them. Hand weeding is preferable.

Part 3: Plant Harvesting and Storage

a. Harvest (some of) your plants. You'll have a decent notion of how big it is when you can see the root at beetroot harvest time. When the beets in the garden reach about a small orange, they are ready to harvest; much more significant, and they won't be as good. Do this by holding the top and leveraging the root up with a fork-like instrument or spade.

b. Some should be left in the soil for the season. You may keep some beetroot in the soil till next spring if you like, but you must protect it. Cover it with a thick layer of hay or straw mulch. As long as the winter temperature does not drop below -18oC/0oF, you should be able to remove the protective covering of straw and dig up more roots during the winter.

c. Be careful with the tops. Remove the leaves by twisting them around 5cm (2") above the crown rather than cutting them off. It will assist in avoiding bleeding, which reduces the flavour and colour of the beet.

d. Store them for later consumption. Root veggies keep well in the refrigerator, making them perfect for winter stockpiling. Beetroot plant growing can be preserved in wooden boxes coated in the sand in a frost-free, dry climate.
