Description
Leek is a non-bulb forming member of the onion family, grown for its long blanched stem and leaves. It has a mild, sweet onion flavour and is eaten raw in salads or cooked in soups, stews and stir-fries. Leek is not grown commercially on a large scale in India, but it is a favourite in kitchen gardens.
Leeks grow best in cool weather, full sun and loose, fertile, well-drained soil. Raise seedlings in a nursery and transplant them when they are about the thickness of a pencil. For long white stems, plant the seedlings in a trench or earth up soil around the stems as they grow.
